I am Princess Meredith NicEssus. Legal name Meredith Gentry, because “Princess” looks so pretentious on a driver’s license. I was the first faerie princess born on American soil, but I wouldn't be the only one for much longer...
Merry Gentry, ex–private detective, now full-time princess, knew she was descended from fertility goddesses, but when she learned she was about to have triplets, she began to understand what that might mean. Infertility has plagued the high ranks of faerie for centuries. Now nobles of both courts of faerie are coming to court Merry and her men, at their home in exile in the Western Lands of Los Angeles, because they will do anything to have babies of their own.
Taranis, King of Light and Illusion, is a more dangerous problem. He tried to seduce Merry and, failing that, raped her. He’s using the human courts to sue for visitation rights, claiming that one of the babies is his. And though Merry knows she was already pregnant when he took her, she can’t prove it.
To save herself and her babies from Taranis she will use the most dangerous powers in all of faerie: a god of death, a warrior known as the Darkness, the Killing Frost, and a king of nightmares. They are her lovers, and her dearest loves, and they will face down the might of the high courts of faerie—while trying to keep the war from spreading to innocent humans in Los Angeles, who are in danger of becoming collateral damage.
My love for all things paranormal came when starting the Merry Gentry and Anita Blake Series by Laurell K. Hamilton. Nothing compares to the thrill you get when you open a brand new LKH book. What you expect from her is EXACTLY what you get. You get beautiful complex characters, you get a huge amount of emotion and heart from the storyline, and you get a great amount of suspense that will have you flipping through the pages like a mad woman. It has been quite a while since I had my hands on the latest Merry Gentry book, and diving in to this one I didn’t miss a beat. It was like I never left this magical world that Ms. Hamilton created.
The one thing that blows my mind in this series and in A Shiver of Light is the incredible descriptive detail that this author gives every single one of her characters, big or small, main or secondary, it doesn’t matter. If they have a name, you will know what they look like. It’s so impressive that after reading about a character, no matter what crazy hair color they have, what unique color eyes they have, what ‘extra bits’ they have, I can immediately picture them, clear as day in my head. Even though this is a paranormal romance/thriller, it still makes the story more real to me. And let’s not stop at just the characters. The locations, the different parts of faerie, the entire world around these characters just come alive in my head because of the amazing detail that is on each page of this book.
Merry Gentry is used to having people try to kill her and her men. Take a number, she has a long list of enemies. Now, she has her beautiful newborn triplets that she has to protect. With the ever-growing old magic returning to the people of faerie, what is a mother to do when her newborn babies seem to have magical abilities that would make a veteran of faerie worrisome. Not to mention she still has her insane family to worry about. Trying to just be with her lovers and her babies is proving to be difficult when you have so much going against you. But Merry Gentry, Princess Meredith NicEssus, is tough as nails. She has witnessed loss and love, and she is a stronger person because of that. She will stop at nothing to protect the ones she holds dearest.
A Shiver of Light is a captivating, enchanting story with the beloved characters that I have grown to absolutely adore. The relationships between Merry and her lovers have grown as well as the relationships between the men themselves. With these new bundles of joy, you will see a different side to these men. These babies will bring hope, love, and faith into the household. They will also bring struggles, and their enemies even closer, but that was to be expected. This was a book that completely satisfied by dose of Ms. Hamilton’s work. From beginning to end, I was enamored with her writing style and descriptive details. You couldn’t ask for a better installment in the series. I’m not sure what’s next with the Merry Gentry series. All I know is what I believe, and I believe that we haven’t seen the last of this array of fascinating and extraordinary characters that I hold so close to my heart.
