He’s the guy no one likes…

Despite winning two national championships, JR “Ace” Anderson was sent packing from his old school after losing the trust of his coach. At Southern U, he has a second chance to prove that his college legacy isn’t endless debauchery and selfishness. But his reputation precedes him, and his teammates offer a chilly welcome in the locker room. The one person who is willing to accept him is the very woman he should stay away from—his new coach’s daughter.

She’s the girl everyone loves…

Bryant Johnson’s only goal in life is to make others happy, even at her own expense. One look at her father’s new star quarterback, and she knows that Ace is her next project. With a reputation for being a “jerk whisperer”, Bryant has spent her last three years at college reforming sorry behavior and turning bad boys into the best boyfriends ever. In Ace, though, she’s met with surly resistance and a sizzling attraction she doesn’t expect. Fixing this wounded warrior will be her biggest challenge yet. Not falling for him will be even harder.

Between her big heart and his damaged one, a battle is ensuing. In this game of love, every defense will crumble.

my thoughts

DOWNED, the third installment of the Gridiron Series by the amazing Jen Frederick, and my FAVORITE of the series so far! I have to admit that I had my doubts when it came to JR ‘Ace’ Anderson as our hero. He had this aloofness about him that aggravated the hell out of me, but when Bryant came into the picture, it all went up from there. Bryant is bright, bubbly, and everyone adores her. Ace is the exact opposite. He’s the new guy that comes with a lot of baggage. The team doesn’t trust him and he doesn’t trust the team, but with Bryant inserting herself in every aspect of Ace’s life, something starts to change. Ace finds himself wanting to be better for her. He thinks she is crazy, but there is something about her light that attracts the hell out of his dark.

Bryant’s life is her ‘projects.’ She takes the bad out of the bad boys and turns them into gentlemen. She never crosses the line though. No attachments. Nothing physical. She does this for one reason only…her sister. Family tragedy struck in the form of her sister committing suicide over a guy, a guy who treated her sister like trash and caused her an emotional upheaval. Bryant will try her best to not let that happen again. So her form of fighting back is taking these ‘projects’ and making them better so there is no chance of that kind of tragedy touching anyone else. But with Ace, she’s not sure if she is even needed. She sees him when no one else does. She sees the good in him, even though his teammates can’t see it. But she doesn’t want to let go and neither does he. Bryant started out wanting to bring out the man that she knows Ace can be. In the end, all he needed was her. What started off as a project, or experiment, turned out to be a love that neither of them can deny.

Oh man, this book was just SO DAMN good! My heart is still all a’flutter. Charming, funny, sexy, and sweet…the main ingredients in a Jen Frederick romance. Feelings that just jump off of the pages and heat that will set your whole body on fire! DOWNED is part of the Gridiron Series, but it can be read as a standalone, just like the rest. This is a great NA Sports Romance Series, and I highly recommend the previous two books as well.
